To utilise them skilfully in writing history requires a knowli dge of the best works of history written by famous historians of ancient and modern times and a knowledge of the history of the rest of India of other countries and of the world %is a whole. [...] The recent and scathing denuoiation of the work of the department by Leonard Walley exaggerated and ill-conceived as it is in some respects was only the natural consequence partly of the more or less systematic distrust of local talent that inared the administrative arrangements of the deqartinent and partly of its continuous starvation for funds and personnel. [...] Again a history of the Deooan on a similar plan of three volumes - ancient mediaeval and modern - has beeundertaken by H. E. H. the Nizam's Government and the only delay in the realization of the scheme is that due to the time necessarily taken in the writing out of the history. [...] They maintained as equal contest with the 'akas in the West and as Vikramaditya of Ujjain is said to have gone forth from PratiAhitia the possibility remains that after all the Satavahanas had something to do with the'expulsion of the.§akas from Ujjain and the foundation of the era of which the completion of the second millennium is about to be celebrated all over India.
