This book gives us a glimpse of the activities of the East India Company and its influence on the economy of Bengal during this formative period from 1704 to 1740. Even in the seventeenth century, the English had found that the farman or charter granted by one Emperor might be disregarded by his successor and that the imperial farman was not always regarded as sacrosanct by the provincial rulers. This naturally gave an element of uncertainty and instability to their position as traders.
