This volume describes the nature of British rule in India for nearly a century after it had become the dominant political power. This volume nine is divided into two Books which deal, respectively, with the political and economic history of the period. The political history is again divided into three parts; the second part dealing with the mutiny and revolt of 1857-8, and the other two with the periods bc fore and after it.
