India - The Taj Mahal and Gardens

1912

The Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh, India, was built between 1631 and 1653 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb and monument to his favorite queen, Arjumand Banu Begum, also known as Mumtaz Mahal. Its massive onion dome and four towers are clearly visible. The white marble mausoleum is probably the most famous part of the Taj Mahal, although it also includes a mosque. The garden of the Taj Mahal is divided into four parts, with sunken flowerbeds and elevated pathways, trees, and fountains. Outside the main structure, Shah Jahan built several red sandstone mausoleums to commemorate his other wives, (1912).
