Government of Bengal Industries Department Bulletin No. 81 Manufacture of Emulsion Type of Creosote Disinfectants

1939

Groundnut oil.. 49 Linseed oil.. 1 (8) Castor oil.. 50 160.7 1 1 to 2 1 to 8 Satisfactory only with Linseed oil.. 25 3 to 6 parts of creosote oil. [...] The water taken is the same up to 35 parts of castor oil but when the castor oil is reduced to 20 parts with the Hardness Number lower still the creosote oil taken is reduced to 1 to 2 parts. [...] In number 4 the castor oil is reduced to 10 parts with the result that the creosote oil taken is 1 to 2 parts only though it takes up to 6 -parts of water on account of the fact that it contains 75 parts of rosin which proves that rosin favours emulsion formation at lower concentrations of soap. [...] If the dilution is in the maximum limit it can take limited quantities of creosote oil in emulsion with soaps containing high percentages of rosin whereas in the case of blended soap with full quota of castor oil no creosote oil goes into emulsion at the maximum stages of dilution. [...] In the light of the above experiments we may now draw the folloing general conclusions for the making of a satisfactory soap for the purposes of manufacturing best quality disinfectants:— (1) The Hardness Number of the soap should lie between 125 to 140 when the highest activity is displayed in emulsion formation other conditions being the same.
