PREFACE As a result of the Government order suspending the printing of the Kannada Research works at the Government Press Bombay in the duration of the war the vast amount of the materials prepared for the press ha [...] The most important discoveries in the first consist of extensive sites of the Early Iron or historic ages at Vaclagaon–Mddhavapfir near Belgaum Itgi on the Tungabhadra in the Shirhatti Taluka Brahma puri on the Palichaganga near Kolhapur and Pattadkal on the Malaprabha in the Badami Taluka of the Bijapur District. [...] The height of the mound and the portion dug out which is assignable to the Buddhist layer would perhaps bear the surmise that the lowermost level contained the remains of Brahmanical culture of the pre-Andhra period.' At Pattadkal Badami Taluka Bijapur District I have spotted an important site which is a table-land on the bank of the Malaprabha about a mile to the south-west of the village. [...] The Inscription is silent about the family or the home of this chief but in view of the fact that this regio4 had been continuously held by the Kadarhbas of Banavisi from the 4th century A. D. -awards down to the time 5"of the later Chalukyas of Kalydni when the Chandavar branch of the same stock vas in possession of it it may be suggested as a plausible view that Ponnama of aka 90o was a Kada [...] But the name SOm'eSvara coupled with the epithets " The crest jewel of the Yadava clan and the chosen lord of the DvaravatIpura " which are commonly borne with the Yadavas of Devagiri leads to the only possible surmise that he must be a Hoysala monarch.
