(2) The Lower Assam block comprising the Mangaldai subdivision Darrang and the districts of Nowgong Kamrup Goalpara and Garo (3) The Surma Valley block which includes in addition to the districts of Cachar and Sylhet the Khasi and Jaintia Hilts Lushai Hills and the State of Manipur. [...] Similarly statistics of the trade carried by steamers between Assam and other provinces are compiled from the invoices preserved in the offices of the Steamship Companies. [...] 3. The statistics of the trade of Assam have been compiled in the following tables :- (a) TabPs I and If—Total rail and river trade of each block of Assam with (i) Calcutta (ii) the rest of Bengal (iii) Bihar and Orissa and (iv) other provinces. [...] The volume of the import in rico expanded by 291 129 maunds mainly on account of the destruction of the Surma Valley harvest by floods but there was no proportionate rise in the price which was lower than in the previous year. Bengal including Calcutta sent most of rice the largest recipient being the Surma Valley block. [...] The Surma Valley block received the largest shard of the former and the Upper Assam block of the latter.
