A Glossary of the Tribes and Castes of the Punjab and North-West Frontier Province

1911

THE compilation of this the 1st volume of the Glossary of Tribes and Castes of the Punjab and North-West Frontier Province has occupied my leisure since the year 1903 when the Ethnographic Survey of India was inaugurated by the late Sir Herbert Risley. [...] It appears to me for example that a thoroughly scientific study of the worship of Devi would be of immense interest and importance not only as a contribution to the history of Hinduism but ako as a chapter in the evolution of human thought. [...] In a small State like Kahltir the Raja probably promoted the outcaste Koli to a recognised status within the pale of caste because he needed his services as a soldier.: whereas the Katoch Rija refused to remove the ban on the Kolis of a tract like Rgjgiri where the clan is pretty numerous because he had no need of their services in a military capacity.' Where the Raja was autocratic or powerful [...] The Mahsuds are encroaching year by year on the hill territory of the tribe and driving them to the plains in which their settlements lie about the month of the Tochi Pass. [...] BiseN Kum one of the 5 sections of the Ahmaclzai Darvesh Khel Wazirs with 3 sub-divisions the Daulat Iso and Umar in the plains and a 41th the Mughal Khel in the hills.
