THE official statistics of the sea-borne trade of Indian cotton compiled from shipping bills and published by the Department of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics in India do not give any information as to the varieties of cotton shipped as under the regulations in force at present such details are not required to be funished by the exporters. [...] On the other hand a knowledge of the nature and extent of the foreign demand for the several varieties of Indian cotton is of the utmost importance to the trade and the grower alike. [...] In Table 2A is shown the approximate distribution of the figures given in Table 1 according to staple length ( 'long and medium staple ' and short staple '). [...] It will be seen that out of the total exports of 2 003 000 bales accounted for the proportion of cotton i and above' and ' below -76" ' constituted 36 and 64% against 27 and 73% respectively in the previous season. [...] Exports to U. S. A. consisted entirely of short staple cotton while of the takings by the United Kingdom Japan and China and the East (except Japan) 40% 82% and 40% respectively were of the short staple varieties."TABLE 1.
