528 „ The diversity of readings again is not confined only to the number of the aphorisms but extends also to the aphorisms themselves ; for in regard to particular aphorisms commentators and compilers differ as to whether they are aphorisms or are the assertions of the author of the Bha§ya. [...] VidyAbhusana seems to us to have been induced to change his opinion as to the authorship and the date of the composition or compliation of the Nyaya-SAtra by the idea that the doctrine of the syllogism was imported into India from Greece. [...] For instance it is called "Hetu-vidya"or "Hetu-Sastra" the science of causes "A nvikikl"§ the science of inquiry "PramAna-§Astra" the science of correct knowledge "Tattva-gfistra" the science of categories "Tarka.vidyh" the science of reasoning "VAdArtha" the science of discussion and "PhakkikA *Pakiini is said to have been a disciple of Upavarta minister of a King of the Nanda dynasty a [...] The Gautama-kunda and the Ksirodadhi river which are still extant at Gautama-sthana verify the account of Gotama given above from the Rigveda while the stone slab and the temple of Rátna at Ahaiysthana are evidence corroborative of the story of Ahalya as given in the RAmdyana. [...] XXXIII).with Gautama author of the Gautama Dharma-S-htra which is declared to be the oldest of the existing works on the sacred law*." Ak§aphda-Gautama founder of the Nyhya Philosophy was almost a contemporary of Buddha-Gautama who founded Buddhism and Indrabhhti Gautama who was a disciple of Mahhvira the reputed founder of Jainism.
