The Atlantic Treaty and the success of the Communists in China might be the two reasons which occasioned the early convening of the conference.. [...] However the ambition of the upstart or the zeal of the woulbe liberator whatever it might have been could not altogether ignore the 'frown in the gallery of the leftist world opinion the thoughtless applause of which had done such a good deal to make him the idol of an admiring country. [...] It was of course divided from the nation at the time of the Russo-German pact but in 1941 thanks to the war between the Reich and the Soviet Union and to the resistance movement in France it succeeded in reintegrating itself in the national community. [...] In face of the danger represented by Russia and of the poverty of our part of the world we think that all the democratic States of Europe should act together for the maintenance of our civilisation to fissure peace and to secure a considerable impi-ovement in our peoples' standard of living. [...] " The supreme claim of the Liberal Party for public recognition is that we have clean hands a clear head and a passionate desire to serve the whole community."
