Indian women in science

1 Jan 2017

The video is a presentation on the presence of women in the field of science in India. In the history of India only a handful of names of women scholars were known till the coming of modernity and the loosening of the patriarchal system. In the Vedic period only the privileged and elite women had access to learning along with men. During this period there emerged such women scholars like Gargi the philosopher, Lilawati the mathematician and Khona he astronomer. It was only till the British period in India that the reach of education touched the lives of women in India. From then on the march of modernization encouraged women to enter public life. The commitment to women’s education by several government initiatives since independence has widened the scope for women. The film features interviews with many women scientists who have paved the way for future women scientists.
