The video is an audio recording of a sarod recital by Radhika Mohan Moitra in 1956. The audio recording is from the rich archives of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The sarod is played in Raga Des, the janya raga of the Khamaj thata. In this performance, the artist has extended the raga with lighter compositions to a full recital. The alap and the jod are followed by the slow and fast-paced gats in Teen Tal and jawa work. He is accompanied by Alla Rakha and Karamatullah Khan on the tabla. Radhika Mohan Moitra (1917-1984) or Radhu-babu as he was widely known was born in the Rajshahi district of the then East Bengal, presently in Bangladesh. He was initially trained in the sarod and sursingar by Mohammed Amir Khan of the Shahjahanpur gharana and later by Mohammed Dabir Khan of the Senia gharana. Radhu Babu combined these two schools in his music. He was an experimental musician who modified sarod and created three new instruments: Mohanveena, Dilbahar and Nabadeepa.
