Folk dances of Nicobarese

This video highlights the lifestyle and the living traditions of the Nicobarese. These groups of islands lying to the south of the Andamans are home to the Nicobarese people. The Nicobarese show great pride in their traditions and cultures. They are good craftsmen and they are known to build their traditional huts. One of the most interesting articles inside a Nicobarese home is the kareau which is a human figure carved out of wood. These kareaus are usually made in honour of a good person. Rites and festivals hold importance in the social and cultural life of the Nicobarese people like the Ossuary Feast. During the renowned pig festival they celebrate by dancing, singing, drinking toddy (palm wine) and feasting all night. The tapping of feet and dance steps are called sanuto while more complex movements are called saralor and sut.
