Green revolusion and the future

1 Jan 2017

This video is a documentary on the monumental change that was brought in the fields of India through the Green Revolution. During the first half of the 20th century the agricultural production of India could no longer sustain the population which had drastically increased out of proportion. The first Five Year Plan (1951-1956) was targeted towards overcoming food shortage through emphasis on irrigation systems, fertilizer manufacture, mechanized farming and land reclamation. The plan received limited success but food shortage prevailed till the end of the 1950s. It was only with the introduction of a high yielding variety of crops like the Mexican dwarf-wheat that India could increase its food productivity. The Green Revolution thus began in the agro-science laboratories of the country where these new high yielding crops were being produced. The first experiment of the Green Revolution began with wheat and thus wheat became the spearhead of the revolution.
