Sanjari : Folk Music of Gujrat by Moora Lala Marwada

This Sanjari programme was based on devotional songs from Gujarat, which are also called ‘Aaradhivani’. In this, hymns and verses of saints like Meerabai, Kabir, Ravidas are sung. Artist Moralal Marwada of the Kutch district is an accomplished artist of Aaradhivani. His voice has an amazing sweetness. Artist Moralal Marwara, who cherishes this tradition of music, represents the 11th generation of his family in this art. In his performance, along with singing, he played the 130-year-old ancestral Santar too. During this, he kept on swaying to the music, which made the audience do the same. During this spectacular performance, Muralal Marwara sang hymns in Sindhi, Kachchi, Gujarati, Rajasthani and Hindi languages. He started this presentation with a Ganapati Vandana. The words were- ‘Gauri Ka Beta, Gauri Ka Putra, Alam Raja Meher Karo’. The next presentation was Guru Mahima – ‘Wari Jaau Re, Balihari Jaau’, written by Sant Das Narayan. This song, presented in the honour of the Guru, was highly appreciated by the audience. After this, the presentation 'Hiye Kaya Bartan Maati Ka Phoote Jas Nahin Kare' in Kabir Vani and the hymn 'Hamare Bhajan Mein, Hamare Satsang Mein Aayo Shri Bhagwan Ji' by Mira, made the whole atmosphere devotional. The next performance of Moralal ji was a song of separation (Virah geet) in the Kachhi language, the lyrics of which were – ‘Meetha Manu Chhaldo (Ring) Aur Palak’. Even otherwise, in folk songs, women's feelings are expressed very adroitly. The emotions in this song also were very strong. The traditional instruments used as accompaniments contributed greatly in making all these songs impressive and effective. Among the accompanying artists, Narayan Bhai played a very unique rhythm on the Ghada Gambela (here ‘Ghada’ means a clay pot on which a piece of leather is tied and ‘Gambela’ means a Tamari made of iron). Noor Mohammed accompanied on Jodia Paava. Jodia Paava, also known as the double flute, is one in which one part plays a permanent note and the other plays the Lahariya sound. Bhikha Bhai Marwada played the Manjira and Sukhdev Marwada played the cymbals, which further added to the sweetness of the devotional songs. When the program was at its peak, the artists sang the popular Krishna hymn 'Damadam Mast Kalandar' written by Fakir Lal Kalandar of Sindh. This hymn added great elation to the atmosphere. After the program, the audience greeted these artists with a long round of applause. संजारी का यह कार्यक्रम गुजरात के भक्ति गीत पर आधारित था, जिसे आराधीवाणी भी कहते हैं। इसमें मीराबाई, कबीर, रविदास जैसे संतों के भजन और पद गाए जाते हैं। कच्छ जिले के कलाकार मूरालाल मारवाडा आराधीवाणी के पारंगत कलाकार हैं। उनकी आवाज में अद्भुत मिठास है। संगीत की इस परंपरा को संजोकर रखने वाले कलाकार मूरालाल मारवाड़ा 11वीं पीढी की नुमाइंदगी करते हैं। उन्होंने अपनी प्रस्तुति में गायकी के साथ साथ 130 साल पुरानी पुश्तैनी संतार बजाई। इस दौरान वे खुद तो झूमते ही रहे दर्शकों को भी झूमने के लिए मजबूर कर दिया। अपनी इस शानदार प्रस्तुति के दौरान मूरालाल मारवाड़ा ने सिंधी, कच्छी, गुजराती, राजस्थानी और हिंदी भाषा के भजन गाए। इसकी शुरूआत उन्होंने गणपति वंदना से की। बोल थे- ‘गवरी का बेटा गवरी का पुत्र आलम राजा मेहर करो’। अगली प्रस्तुति संत दास नारायण की लिखी गुरू महिमा ‘वारी जाऊं रे, बलिहारी जाऊं’ थी। गुरू के सम्मान में प्रस्तुत इस रचना को दर्शकों ने बहुत सराहा। इसके बाद कबीर वाणी में ‘हिये काया बर्तन माटी का, फूटे जसे नहीं करे’ और मीरा के भजन ‘हमारे भजन में, हमारे सत्संग में आवो श्री भगवान जी’ की प्रस्तुति ने पूरा वातावरण भक्तिमय कर दिया। मूरालाल जी की अगली प्रस्तुति थी एक कच्छी विरह गीत, जिसके बोल थे- ‘मीठा माणु, छलड़ो (अंगूठी) और ‘पलक’। वैसे भी लोकगीतों में स्त्री की भावनाओं को बहुत करीने से व्यक्त किया जाता है। इस गीत में भी भाव पक्ष बहुत मजबूत था। इन सभी गीतों को प्रभावी बनाने में संगत में इस्तेमाल किए गए पारंपरिक वाद्ययंत्रों का बड़ा योगदान रहा। संगत कलाकारों में नारायण भाई ने घड़ा गम्बेला (मिट्टी का घड़ा जिस पर चमडा लगाया जाता है और गम्बेला मतलब लोहे की तगारी) पर अनूठी ताल दी। नूर मोहम्मद ने जोड़िया पावा पर संगत की । जोड़िया पावा यानि युगल बांसुरी, जिसके एक हिस्से से स्थायी सुर बजता है और दूसरे से स्वर लहरियां। भीखा भाई मारवाड़ा ने मंजीरा और सुखदेव मारवाड़ा ने झांझ बजाकर भक्तिगीतों की मिठास को और बढ़ा दिया। कार्यक्रम जब अपने पूरे रंग में था तब कलाकारों ने सिंध के फ़कीर लाल कलंदर का लिखा लोकप्रिय कृष्ण भजन ‘दमादम मस्त कलंदर’ सुनाया। इस भजन ने माहौल में जोश भर दिया। कार्यक्रम के बाद दर्शकों ने तालियाँ बजाकर बहुत देर तक इन कलाकारों का अभिवादन किया।
