The Complex Fate: Hawthorne, Henry James and Some other American Writer

All of the essays in the present volume were written during the past three years of 1967. 'The Poetry of Wallace Stevens' was originally published in Partisan Review; the remaining essays first appeared in Scrutiny. The opening essays on Hawthorne and Henry James were written as a kind of exploratory excursion into a project undertaken while holding a Fellowship from The American Council of Learned Societies.
