This interesting book attempts to give an account of various local practices among the people of Northern India. It has six chapters and covers discussions on the beliefs of ‘the evil eye’, tree, animal and serpent worship, totemism and fetishism, ‘black art’ etc. The book talks about the different theories people associate with these beliefs and the rituals they practice in order to supposedly secure their lives. In various places the author makes comparisons of these practices with popular beliefs in other parts of the world.
