The book is an attempt to compile the English, Persian, French, Hindi, Sanskrit, Rajasthani and Marathi sources and reconstruct the story of the fall of the Mughal empire from the invasion of Nadir Shah in 1739 to the British conquest of Delhi in 1803. The book deals with the reigns of Muhammad Shah, the contest between the Afghans and Marathas, the disintegration of the political order in Punjab, Malwa and Rajputana, the reign of Ahmed Shah, the rebellion of Safdar Jung, and the establishment of the British crown in 1803.
