This book contains a historical analysis of the social, economic, and political activities of the Bengali intelligentsia whose strong desire for freedom from British domination led them to take the first bold step to raise their backward, caste-ridden, myopic countrymen from the pit of ignorance, a situation which was fully exploited by the British rulers to promote the wealth and welfare of Great Britain while Bengal was left to sink deeper in poverty and crass ignorance.
