Barhut Book 1 Stone as a Story-Teller

1 Jan 1934

This book carries a rare illustrated monograph of Bharhut, an ancient Buddhist stupa in Madhya Pradesh. The book is the first of the three books that talk in depth about this ruinous stupa. The Bharhut stupa was discovered by Alexander Cunningham in 1873. Authored by Benimadhab Barua, it is an extensive account of Cunningham’s discoveries at the site: the inner stone railing, the pillars, the four gateways, among other stone structures. The book gives detailed descriptions of all the stone structures at the site. These descriptions include the details of their composition, inscriptions, depictions, art and architecture.
