Drama in Rural India

1 Jan 1964

This work by J C Mathur reflects his exceptional attempt to survey and study traditional drama as staged in different parts of the country. This book is a clear representation of his physical experiences that he attained during his purposeful visits to remote villages of India. Author Mathur has been able to observe and display the vibrant as well as general features of traditional drama performed all over the subcontinent throughout the year. The first chapter of the book itself is a reflection of the vibrant nature of folk drama being staged in several places including the temple premises; fairs, streets, and private premises. The author also writes about the village auditorium and its functioning in this chapter. The book has been designed systematically with its chapters to provide a vivid account of traditional drama in India. Mathur also presents his observation regarding the themes and social purposes of folk drama along with its acting and aesthetic pleasure. The tradition of puppet-drama is also an area of observation in this work. The inseparable influence of music and dance on traditional drama has also been recognized by Mathur.
