This book by J H Hutton is a detailed presentation of castes in India. The book consists of four parts and twelve chapters. The author has presented an introductory account of castes relating to Southern, Western, Central, Eastern, and Northern India in the first chapter. Meanwhile, the second part of this book deals with the structure, sanctions, and functions of caste in India. Part III is concerned with the analogous institutions of castes outside the subcontinent of India. It also has a chapter on the traditional origin of caste system in India as well as its implications. This work on castes by Hutton provides a clear understanding of the caste system and the several factors behind its emergence.
