Vol 1 deals with the complete works of Alexander Cunningham on the Inscriptions of Ashoka. It includes all inscriptions before the year 1879. Part 1 of the book deals with all inscribed rocks, caves and pillars with their exact positions. Part 2 deals with the language and alphabets of various edicts which were mostly in Pali, because most of the Ashoka inscriptions were Buddhistical in nature. Part 3 deals with the arrangement of all the inscriptions in Roman characters. Part 4 deals with the collection of all the Ashoka inscriptions published by Wilson, Prinsep, and Burnouf.
