Preaching Buddha

The stone sculpture of a Buddha (head broken) seated in 'Dharmachakrapravartanamudra' turning the wheel of Law (Dharma-cakra) at Sarnath, indicated by a depiction of the five chosen monks (Pancha-Vargiya Bhikkhus) with a wheel between carved on the pedestal. The scene represents the first preaching by Buddha, forming the most important event in the history of Buddhism. This figure is essentially a miniature version of the celebrated image of the preaching Buddha of the Gupta period from Sarnath, with a minor difference of details.
