Note
Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, one of the pioneering figures in shaping Indian Modern art scene, was born in 1924 in Maharashtra. He studied art at Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai and obtained a diploma in 1948. He impressed the likes of the progressive artists of the time like F.N Souza, S.H Raza and M.F Husain, and was invited to join the Progressive Artist Group in 1950. Today Gaitonde is recognized for his non-representational art; but he started off by painting stylized figures and gradually made his transition to the abstract art, attaining the ethereal lyricism and poetry. He used limited colours and mostly the hues and gradation of the same colour to depict his subjects which ultimately would become a fraction of the painting. Gaitonde was inspired from post-war artists like Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Joan Miro. His works are in the collection of National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai, Mr. Bal Chhabda, Mumbai.
