B. N. Arya was an exponent of the watercolour wash technique and the imagery of the Neo Bengal school. His paintings reflect his inspiration of the epic Puranic and the ancient kavya themes, along with the reflection of poor and common working people in his works. Going beyond the representational imagery in the works, he explores the semi abstract and abstract style of working, with which he explored the themes of life and shadows of death and decay.
