Nalini Malani was born in Karachi, Pakistan in 1946 and got her Diploma from Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art, Mumbai in 1969. Thereafter she moved to Paris to study under French Government Scholarship for Fine Arts in 1970. Her works are often influenced by her encounters as a refugee of Partition of India. Nalini Malani's work reflects a deep commitment to women's issues, particularly with reference to social and inter-personal relationships in which women's roles and contributions often go unappreciated. She draws parallels from both western and Indian mythological, religious and historical aspects to highlight the concerns of women and the pivotal roles they play in the societal structure. Malani incorporates a variety of media in her works. Beginning with watercolour on paper in her earlier works, she has progressed and worked in diverse media over the years, ranging from acrylic sheets, video projections, performance art and multimedia installations. Nalini Malani has done numerous solo shows, joint exhibitions, collaborated in various theatre/ performances and video films since the 1980s. In 1999, she was invited as Artist- in- Residence by Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan and Lucas Art Residencies, Montalvo Ca., USA in 2005. She was honoured with the Fukuoka Arts and Culture Prize in 2013. Nalini Malani lives and works in Mumbai.
