Sankho Chaudhury was born in 1916 in Santhal Pargana, Bihar. He studied under Ramkinkar Vaij in Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. After completing his Diploma in Fine Arts in 1939, he visited Nepal to assist Ramkinkar to execute the War Memorial where he studied the Nepalese system of casting as well. In 1949, he was appointed as a Reader in the Department of Sculpture and soon became the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University, Baroda. Under his leadership and encouragement, Baroda emerged as one of the most dynamic and avant- garde schools of sculpture with many eminent sculptors emerging from the school. Sankho Chaudhury experimented with a variety of mediums- wood, stone, bronze, welded metal, plasters, etc. Widely acknowledged as a pragmatic teacher, he instilled the same zeal in his students. The artist touched a number of themes and worked on a variety of subjects throughout his career from monumental sculptures to portraits. Sankho Chaudhury toiled endlessly on enhancing the inherent quality of the medium and the material he worked on. The artist was awarded Padma Shri in 1971 and also served as the chairman of Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi in the 1980s. He also represented India at the UNESCO, Paris Conference on preservation of Folk Lore Tradition in 1985. Apart from executing several monumental sculptural commissions, including the 'Music' sculpture at All India Radio, Delhi and Statue of Gandhi at Rio de Janiero, Brazil, he was the man behind the setting up of the Artist Studios of Lalit Kala Academy at Garhi, New Delhi.
