The Dissolution of the Monasteries .

The monasteries were one of the great bulworks of the papal system, so they represented a threat to Henry's authority after he had declared himself head of the English church. He appointed his chief minister Thomas Cromwell to carry out a programme of suppression and confiscation that left many monasteries to fall into ruin.
