- Jyoti Bhatt is amongst India's most versatile artists having made his mark in painting, printmaking as well as photography. Born in Bhavnagar, Gujarat in 1934, Jyoti Bhatt studied painting at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda from 1950 to 1956 under the guidance of legendary artists Sankho Chowdhary, N S Bendre and KG Subramanayan. He learned the art of frescoes and mural painting from Banasthali Vidyapeeth, Rajasthan along the same time. He also learned Printmaking from Pratt Institute and Pratt Graphic Art Center, New York under Fulbright & John D Rockfeller II Grants specializing in Graphics in the year 1964. He also won a Government of Italy scholarship to study at the Academia Di Belle Arti at Naples in 1961, where he specialized in Graphics. He has received several prestigious awards and accolades including the Grand-Prix at the 13th Annual Photo Contest for Asia and Pacific, UNESCO, Japan in 1989. In 1967, he was also awarded Gold Medal at the International Print Biennale, Florence, Italy. In 2005, Jyoti Bhatt was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award (Distinguished Photo Artist) by the Academy of Visual Media, New Delhi. Jyoti Bhatt started his artistic career in the 1950s as a painter and printmaker. Works of his early phase are inspired from the elements of folk and tribal traditions of India. While experimenting with the graphic arts, he was simultaneously involved in the photographic documentation of the folk practices of rural Gujarat. He used a narrative language integrating the decorative and figurative imagery consisting of symbols and motifs- birds, animals, cult goddesses, etc. By the 1970s, his camera lens superseded his canvas and paper. He found solace in the art of photography, recording the aesthetics and in-depth details of the fast-disappearing cultural heritage. Jyoti Bhatt lives and works in Vadodara.
