- Rekha Rodwittiya was born on 31st October, 1958 in Bangalore. After completing her Bachelor's in Fine Arts from Maharaja Sayaji Rao University, Baroda, she received an INLAKS scholarship to pursue Masters in Painting from Royal College of Art, London. She also studied film and video from the Fulham Institute, London for a year and was also bestowed with the Staff Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation Asian Cultural Council to work in the U.S. for a year. She was also invited by Svenska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden as Faculty and Artist-in-residence at the Konsthogskolan Art College. She also studied and practiced photography under the guidance of eminent artist, Prof. Jyoti Bhatt during her graduation years. Rekha Rodwittiya was among the first group of women artists to lay the ground for female emancipation in India in art. She has consistently been exploring archetypal figuration of the female body, sometimes in a celebratory mode. Rekha's female figures emanate from everyday domestic scenarios carrying various household tools and objects. Shifting from a more expressionistic vocabulary in her earlier works to employing flat, bold and vivid colours, Rekha uses the iconic female body as a metaphor to comment on gender inequality and women empowerment. Her gigantic canvases having equally monumental figures not only epitomize the presence of a female form, but also engages the viewer to comprehend the analogies underneath her paintings. She has participated in various solo as well group shows in India and abroad. Rekha Rodwittiya lives and works in Baroda.
