Born in the rural area of Sanjaya, in Gujarat, Parekh as an artist developed a pictrial language of her own. Taking inspiration from the rural and folk art, artist Madhvi Parekh attempts to contemporarize the art form in her own individual style, which is a sort of stylized folk art. Madhvi creates fascinating images that have a naive charm about them but are loaded with emotions that are heartily concerned with different issues related mostly to women. Her artworks also interact with the dialectics between the rural and urban societies. Most of her paintings are representations of her childhood memories. She chooses not to plan her compositions and this approach to painting gives her renditions a very flexible character. A non formal art education has proved to be beneficial as it has led her to experiment more with her material and composition. The artist consciously chose to depart from the use of traditional material to modern material like oil, acrylic and watercolour creating several fantastic series of paintings like the Last Supper and the Evening in Tungnath series in acrylic on canvas. Madhvi has held around sixteen solo shows and innumerable group exhibitions and workshops. She has been honoured with the National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi in 1979, and has been awarded with many international scholarships. Madhvi and her artist husband Manu Parekh were filmed for a documentary sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs, GOI, New Delhi. The artist lives and works in Delhi.
