Lava and Kusha hold the Horse of 'Ashvamegha-Yajna'

This Kangra miniature set amidst a beautifully laid terrain with shrubs, trees, birds, animals, huts, soldiers and sages scattered all over, stages the romantic climax of the epic Ramayana. The painting depicts how the young Lava is commanding Kush to tie the horse to the banana tree on the extreme right Shatrughna riding a chariot driven by four horses is in the centre of his army looking at the boys in dismay. In the centre of the painting, Lava is shown tying the horse to the banana tree. Another sage-like frightening figure is advising Lava not to tie the horse because it belongs to the mighty kingdom of Ayodhya. The upper left corner shows sage Valmiki engaged in teaching a disciple outside a hut. Sita is shown seated with a lady of the hermitage in her hut, and another, talking to her. In the foreground, the artist has painted two deer, a peacock and a tiger to show the serene and calm atmosphere of the hermitage of Valmiki.
