- Tyeb Mehta was born in 1925 in a small town, Kapadvanj in Gujarat. Before getting his Diploma in Painting from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai in 1952, he worked as a film editor. In 1968, he received the Rockefeller Fund Scholarship to work in the United States. Profoundly moved by the works of Francis Bacon, he adopted a visual language which was more inspired by European art and French Modernism in his initial years. A member of the Progressive Artists' Group, Tyeb Mehta also traveled to London and lived there for five years. After returning to India in 1964, his art was more influenced by the Indian tradition of miniature art and subjects related to the icons of Indian mythology. He also lived in Santiniketan as as Artist- in- Residence from 1984-1985. In 1970, he won the 'Filmfare Critics Award' for his film 'Koodal', a sixteen minute experimental film made for Films Division of the Government of India. He was awarded with a Gold Medal by the President of India on the occasion of Lalit Kala Akademi Golden Jubilee Celebration in Delhi in the year 2004. He was also honored with the Kalidas Sanman by Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh in 1988 and Manpatra by the Government of Maharashtra in 2004 in Mumbai.
