History of Orissa from the earliest times to the British Period Vol I by R D Banerji was published in the year 1930. The book is divided into twenty two chapters. It begins by talking about the topography of the state of Orissa, followed by people, castes, and languages. The author then highlights the pre-historic antiquities and the various dynasties which existed in the past, such as the Nandas and the Mauryas, Kharavela and the Empire of the Kalinga. The books offers substantial material on the Kalingas, and Orissa in the Scythian and Gupta periods, Harshavardhana and Sailodbhavas, Orissa as seen by Yuan Chwang, the Karas, the Bhanja dynasty, Tungas, Sulkis, the Somavamsi Kings of Kosala, the early Gangas of Kalinga, the Eastern Gangas- Vajrahasta to Anangabhima II, the Eastern Gangas- Rajaraja III to Narasimha I, the foundation of the Empire of Kapilendra, the Empire of Orissa- Purushottama (1470-97), the decline of Orissa- Prataparudra (1497-1541) and finally, the last of the Gajapatis.
