Himalayan Art

1 Jan 1931

Himalayan Art by J C French was published in the year 1931. The author seems to know the hills quite well and therefore mentions the first time he got acquainted with the drawings from the Kangra Valley. French talks about the art of Kangra with frankness and abandon and a spontaneous directness which affects one like some of our own ballad-poetry, with its stock turn of phrases and its traditional refrains, but with heart-piercing sudden sweetness. The author finally calls it something unique in the world of art. French takes us through the actual hills in the text and makes the reader feel what it is like to travel in the high valleys, where the locomotive means of travel is still the same as it has been for some thousand years, and hence one can picture in their minds the country where this art was produced and breathe in some of the atmosphere of its history.
