India - Brahman Bridal Party

1918

A posed photograph of a Brahman (Brahmin) bridal party in South India, where the bride is 12 years of age, and the groom is 40 years old. The bride is wearing an intricately wrapped sari, a nose ring, and bracelets on her wrists and ankles. The groom is wearing a dhoti, kurta, and a turban, and is holding a book and a stick. Other men in the party are also wearing dhotis. One male child is naked. Two men standing in the background are wearing caps, formal shirts, and shoes. All members are sporting white markings on their faces, most likely sacred ash. Brahmins are the highest caste in India, made up of priests (brahmans) and scholars of the Vedic texts, (1918).
