Ceylon - Playing Ceremonial Tom-toms

1912

Four men and a boy are playing on ceremonial Tom-toms in front of a crowd of spectators in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The large crowd contains men and women in both Western styles and more traditional dress. A large umbrella can be seen on the left. Several buildings are visible in the background. The drum in the picture is probably a rabana, a large drum that is placed on the ground and played by two or more people. The rabana is often played by women, and is used for celebrations such as weddings and the New Year, (1912).
