Calcutta, India - Chowringhee Road

1912

A northern view of Chowringhee Road in Calcutta (Kolkata), Bengal, India. This street was the chief European thoroughfare. The street is lined with horse-drawn carriages and poles holding up power lines. A man on a bicycle is riding down the center of the road. Large ornate buildings are visible on the right and in the background. The building on the right is likely the Grand Hotel of Calcutta, today known as the Oberoi Grand Hotel. Between Chowringhee Road and the Ganges River is an open field called the Maidan, an open field that is a home to sports fields, gardens, and statues, (1912).
