Bengal, India - Native Guards

1912

Indian guards form a line at the Oriental Pageant in honor of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Calcutta (Kolkata), Bengal, India. The soldiers are dressed in uniforms and turbans, and are holding their rifles while lining up in a ceremonial row. Another row of soldiers can be seen standing behind them. Soon after his coronation in June 1911, King George V of England and Queen Mary traveled to India for the Delhi Dunbar on December 11, 1911, where they were ceremonially proclaimed Emperor and Empress of India. The King and Queen then traveled to other parts of India, including Kolkata, where this photo was taken. See also slide B3192, (1912).
