Gate of Red Fort, Delhi, India, ca.1900-1929

View of the Delhi Gate of the Red Fort built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and completed in 1648. The walls of the Fort are constructed from red sandstone and can reach a height of 33 meters. The road leading up to the gate crosses the moat, supplied by the Yamuna River, which surrounds most of the wall. ❧ This is one of a series of photographs contained in an album showing popular tourist attractions in India, the album was owned by an unknown Church of Scotland missionary who had probably taken the tour whilst working out in the region. Unfortunately there is very little information with the photographs as to there ownership or subject matter.
