Group at Laying of Foundation Stone, Chamba, India, ca.1900

“Group on occasion of laying foundation Stone.” Group portrait of several men seated and standing underneath canopy. Included in the group are the Raja (seated centre), likely Raja Sham Singh (1866-1905). Immediately to the right of the Raja is Rev. James McClymont (1848-1927), who came from Scotland for the dedication. Also pictured is John Hutchison (1848-1936) behind and to the left of the Raja, who took over the Chamba mission in 1873 and stayed there until his death in 1936. The Chamba mission was established, in 1863, by William Ferguson (1821-1904) as an independent venture.
