The door of the Patel's house, Sangamner, Maharashtra, India, s.d

"The door of the Patel's house, Sangamner." The paintings on either side of the door show Hindu gods and goddesses and the string of leaves wards off evil. The patel, or mayor, of Sangamner became a friend of the Indian missionary, Samuel Rahator. Samuel Rahator was the son of Marathi Rajputs who had converted to Christianity. He became an ordained minister of the Methodist Church in India in 1892. His Marathi Mission eventually had 8 catechists, 6 colporteurs, 15 school teachers and 2 Bible women operating in towns and villages in Maharashtra. He died in 1936. From a set of lantern slides entitled "Our Indian Fellow Workers" compiled by Frank Deaville Walker (1878-1945), editor of the Methodist Missionary Society magazines Foreign Field and its successor, Kingdom Overseas. Many of the photographs Walker used were his own, taken on visits to the MMS mission fields between 1920 and 1937.
