Pilgrim doing penance, West Bengal, ca.1900

"Hindoo doing penance by measuring the ground with his body going to the Ganges." Scene of a pilgrim lying on the ground with people standing nearby. This is probably at Purulia which was situated in the Santalia mission field in the Manbhoom district. The station at Purulia was established by the Gossner Mission Society of Berlin. This image is from a collection of photographs which possibly belonged to Dr Karl Uffman. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, joined the Kikuyu mission, from 1901 to 1905, and was the son of Dr Henry Uffman who ran the Leprosy Asylum in Purulia, West Bengal.
