Chains of caste, India, ca. 1930

Tinted lantern slide titled "Chains of Caste", the beginning slide to a set created by Regions Beyond Missionary Union (although the original set is lost). The image shows three men walking in a desert-like area. The men wear loin cloths and have braided hair. It is possible that they are either outside the caste social system of organisation in Hindu society or are from the "Dalit" ("Untouchable") group. This slide comes from a collection created by missionaries from Regions Beyond Missionary Union, an interdenominational Protestant evangelical mission working in northeast India (Bihar and Orissa) and Nepal.
