"Mausoleum of Prince Etmad-Dowlah [Itmad-ud-Daulah], Agra. 1232." Exterior view of the tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg ennobled as Itmad-ud-Daulah (The Pillar of the State). It was built by Begum Nur Jahan, the daughter of Ghiyas Beg. Small in comparison to some tombs it has become known as the 'Jewel Box', the Persian and Indian styles can be seen in the Chhatris topped minarets and elaborate Jali screens inset into the archways. ❧ This is one of a series of photographs contained in an album showing popular tourist attractions in India, the album was owned by an unknown Church of Scotland missionary who had probably taken the tour whilst working out in the region. Unfortunately there is very little information with the photographs as to there ownership.
