Thongdrol hanging

1 Jan 1970

The Guru Thongdrol hanging on the Thimphu Tashichho Dzong during the coronation of the fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck of Bhutan on 2nd June 1947. Thongdrol- literally means 'liberation on sight', and it is believed that simply viewing one of these large relics washes one's sins away. When the thongdrol is rolled up again to put back into the safety of dzong, the old people pray to ensure that they will live other year to see the thongdrol again the following year. This particular Thongdrol is unfolded only on special occasions. [Dawa Dem 4/9/2009]
