Coir production in India is very traditional: Over the past 200 years, it has evolved from a mainly domestic activity to a partially mechanized industry that employs tens of thousands of people. Many challenges face the industry, among them low wages and poor socio-economic conditions of coir workers. Murali Krishnan sends us this report from "coir country."
