Context An animal character in the story of king Maname, Maname Khatava (Sin.) (Vide Preface). Material Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica). Iconography The mask is hollowed. It is brown in colour and has a prominent snout. The texture is smooth. The iconographic features registered on the mask represent in eloquent form the normal characteristics of a fox. This is a crafty animal, which is highlighted in the mask by the position of the eyes. It does not look straight into the eyes of the onlooker, but makes a shadowed, sideways glance. The narrow, raised ears suggest an animal waiting to prounce on its prey. Comments on the Umlauff Catalogue The term ¿nariya¿ has wrongly been transliterated as ¿nani¿, which is incorrect. 2000 06 06 Dr. M. H.
